2020 Democratic Presidential Nominee Weekly Power Rankings - January 22nd, 2020
This list looks at who I believe currently has the best chance of winning the 2020 Democratic Party nomination for President. Only notable individuals who have announced they are running are included. I am not a political expert, so don’t take this too seriously. Feel free to provide feedback.
Notes for This Week:
- We are only 12 days away from the Iowa Caucus.
- The Trump Impeachment Trial started in full force yesterday, so Senators Sanders, Warren, Klobuchar, and Bennet are off the campaign trail for at least a week.
1. Joe Biden
Previous Ranking: 1 (-)Credentials: Vice President of the United States (2009–2017); U.S. Senator from Delaware (1973–2009)
Notes: Sanders and Biden have really going at each other lately, especially over Social Security. Sanders even had to apologize for a supporter's op-ed that stated that Biden had a corruption problem.
2. Bernie Sanders
Previous Ranking: 2 (-)Credentials: U.S. Senator from Vermont (2007–Current); U.S. Representative from Vermont (1991–2007); Mayor of Burlington, Vermont (1981–1989)
Notes: It's that time of the primary season when things get nasty. In Hillary Clinton joined the fray with some harsh words about Sanders during in new documentary.
3. Elizabeth Warren
Previous Ranking: 3 (-)Credentials: U.S. Senator from Massachusetts (2013–Current); Assistant to the President for the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (2010–2011); Congressional Oversight Panel Chair for the Troubled Asset Relief Program (2008–2010)
Notes: During last week's debate, Sanders denied saying a woman couldn't be President to Warren, and she accused him of calling her a liar afterwards. Warren and Sanders have long been friends, but it looks like the two liberal leaders of the race are starting to feud.
4. Pete Buttigieg
Previous Ranking: 4 (-)Credentials: Mayor of South Bend, Indiana (2012 — Current)
5. Amy Klobuchar
Previous Ranking: 6 (+1)Credentials: U.S. Senator from Minnesota (2007-Present)
Notes: Klobuchar moves up in the rankings due to stronger showings in national and early state polls, which now have her above Yang. She also earned a controversial co-endorsement (with Warren) from the New York Times.
6. Andrew Yang
Previous Ranking: 5 (-1)Credentials: Entrepreneur
7. Michael Bloomberg
Previous Ranking: 7 (-)Credentials: Mayor of New York City (2002-2013)
Notes: Bloomberg is actually polling well nationally, often getting 5th place. Unfortunately, he's not even on the ballot in the first two primary states, and he hasn't participated in any debates due to his not taking donations.
8. Tom Steyer
Previous Ranking: Honorable MentionCredentials: Billionaire
Notes: Steyer just wants to say "hi" to Bernie.
Honorable Mentions
- Michael Bennet, U.S. Senator from Colorado
- John Delaney, Former U.S. Representative from Maryland
- Tulsi Gabbard, U.S. Representative from Hawaii
- Deval Patrick, Former Governor of Massachusetts
