2020 Democratic Presidential Nominee Weekly Power Rankings - January 15th, 2020
This list looks at who I believe currently has the best chance of winning the 2020 Democratic Party nomination for President. Only notable individuals who have announced they are running are included. I am not a political expert, so don’t take this too seriously. Feel free to provide feedback.
Notes for This Week:
- We are only 19 days away from the Iowa Caucus.
- We have some rather big dropouts this week: Marianne Williamson and Cory Booker. Williamson's exit was expected after laying off her entire staff earlier this month. Booker looked like he might have more legs, but not making last night's debate was a big blow to the once potential front runner.
- The "major" candidate list is now down to twelve, so I consolidated the Honorable Mentions.
1. Joe Biden
Previous Ranking: 1 (-)Credentials: Vice President of the United States (2009–2017); U.S. Senator from Delaware (1973–2009)
2. Bernie Sanders
Previous Ranking: 2 (-)Credentials: U.S. Senator from Vermont (2007–Current); U.S. Representative from Vermont (1991–2007); Mayor of Burlington, Vermont (1981–1989)
Notes: There has been some controversy in the past few days after rumors about a conversation Sanders and Warren had in 2018. He supposedly told her that a woman couldn't win the presidency, and she disagreed. Sanders has denied that he said that, but Warren seems to have confirmed it on her end. They spared about it at the debate, but it's unclear who really came out the winner.
3. Elizabeth Warren
Previous Ranking: 3 (-)Credentials: U.S. Senator from Massachusetts (2013–Current); Assistant to the President for the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (2010–2011); Congressional Oversight Panel Chair for the Troubled Asset Relief Program (2008–2010)
Notes: After the conflicting reports of the conversation, some Bernie supporters (and possibly Russian trolls) starting coming hard at Warren on social media.
4. Pete Buttigieg
Previous Ranking: 4 (-)Credentials: Mayor of South Bend, Indiana (2012 — Current)
5. Andrew Yang
Previous Ranking: 5 (-)Credentials: Entrepreneur
Notes: Yang received a recent endorsement from Dave Chappelle.
6. Amy Klobuchar
Previous Ranking: 6 (-)Credentials: U.S. Senator from Minnesota (2007-Present)
7. Michael Bloomberg
Previous Ranking: 7 (-)Credentials: Mayor of New York City (2002-2013)
Notes: The Bloomberg campaign tweeted some interesting content during the debate.
8. Tom Steyer
Previous Ranking: Honorable MentionCredentials: Billionaire
Notes: With the recent dropouts, someone has to be #8, and Steyer makes the most sense. He actually made last night's debate, and he's getting some good (albeit inconsistent) numbers in early state polls.
Honorable Mentions
- Michael Bennet, U.S. Senator from Colorado
- John Delaney, Former U.S. Representative from Maryland
- Tulsi Gabbard, U.S. Representative from Hawaii
- Deval Patrick, Former Governor of Massachusetts
