2020 Democratic Presidential Nominee Weekly Power Rankings  - November 20, 2019

This list looks at who I believe currently has the best chance of winning the 2020 Democratic Party nomination for President. Only notable individuals who have announced they are running or have formed an exploratory committee are included. I am not a political expert, so don’t take this too seriously. Feel free to provide feedback.

Notes for This Week:
  • Former Massachusetts Governor Deval Patrick announced last week that he is running for the Democratic nomination, joining Michael Bloomberg as a late edition to the race. We are less than three months away from the first primary elections, and with a three way tie in the polls, some Democrats are smelling blood in the water.
  • Tonight is the 5th Democratic primary debate, but the Trump impeachment public hearings this week are certain to overshadow the event.
  • Speaking of debates, the 6th debate in December is shaping up to have nine candidates (everyone tonight minus Booker).
  • Wayne Messam has suspended his campaign

1. Joe Biden

Previous Ranking: 1 (-)
Credentials: Vice President of the United States (20092017); U.S. Senator from Delaware (1973–2009)
Notes: If Biden is trying to win over younger voters, his comment that he believes marijuana is a gateway drug won't help.

2. Elizabeth Warren

Previous Ranking: 2 (-)
Credentials: U.S. Senator from Massachusetts (2013–Current); Assistant to the President for the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (2010–2011); Congressional Oversight Panel Chair for the Troubled Asset Relief Program (2008–2010)

3. Bernie Sanders

Previous Ranking: 3 (-)
Credentials: U.S. Senator from Vermont (2007–Current); U.S. Representative from Vermont (1991–2007); Mayor of Burlington, Vermont (1981–1989)
Notes: The Sanders campaign announced that they have 4 million contributions, which is the fasted any presidential candidate has reached that mark.

4. Pete Buttigieg

Previous Ranking: 4 (-)
Credentials: Mayor of South Bend, Indiana (2012 — Current)
Notes: Buttigieg has surged in Iowa and New Hampshire polls this month, including leading in a few polls. While his national numbers have only seen a slight bump, gaining traction in the first two primary states is huge for momentum. There have been a lot of think pieces about what is causing this new spike. It's looking like moderate Democrats who aren't excited about Biden are flocking to Mayor Pete.

5. Kamala Harris

Previous Ranking: 5 (-)
Credentials: U.S. Senator from California (2017–Current); Attorney General of California (2011–2017); District Attorney of San Francisco (2004–2011)
