2020 Democratic Presidential Nominee Weekly Power Rankings - October 9, 2019
This list looks at who I believe currently has the best chance of winning the 2020 Democratic Party nomination for President. Only notable individuals who have announced they are running or have formed an exploratory committee are included. I am not a political expert, so don’t take this too seriously. Feel free to provide feedback.
Notes for This Week:
Trump is still dominating the news with the impeachment inquiry, but one piece of news we do have on the primary is the Q3 fundraising totals for most of the candidates. Official numbers come in next week, but for now, here are the self-reported numbers so far in order, along with the previous quarter's totals:
- Bernie Sanders: $25.3 million ($25.7M)
- Elizabeth Warren: $24.6 million ($19.2M)
- Pete Buttigieg: $19.1 million ($24.9M)
- Joe Biden: $15.2 million ($22M)
- Kamala Harris: $11.6 million ($11.8M)
- Andrew Yang: $10 million ($2.8M)
- Cory Booker: $6 million ($4.5M)
- Amy Klobuchar: $4.5 million ($3.9M)
- Beto O'Rourke: >$3.6 million ($3.6M)
- Marianne Williamson: $3 million ($1.5M)
- Steve Bullock: $2.3 million ($2.1M)
- Michael Bennet: $2.1 million ($3.5M)
1. Joe Biden
Previous Ranking: 1 (-)Credentials: Vice President of the United States (2009–2017); U.S. Senator from Delaware (1973–2009)
Notes: Biden's fundraising totals dropped significantly this quarter, but his polling numbers have only taken a small hit so far. It doesn't looks like his association with the Trump impeachment scandal is helping or hurting him just yet.
2. Elizabeth Warren
Previous Ranking: 2 (-)Credentials: U.S. Senator from Massachusetts (2013–Current); Assistant to the President for the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (2010–2011); Congressional Oversight Panel Chair for the Troubled Asset Relief Program (2008–2010)
Notes: Warren is the only Top 5 candidate to see an increase in funding this quarter. In fact, she saw a surge that put her second to only Sanders.
3. Bernie Sanders
Previous Ranking: 3 (-)Credentials: U.S. Senator from Vermont (2007–Current); U.S. Representative from Vermont (1991–2007); Mayor of Burlington, Vermont (1981–1989)
Notes: Sanders' campaign has confirmed it was a heart attack that prompted his surgery and hospital stay. Sanders himself said this week that he would slow down the pace of his campaign.
4. Kamala Harris
Previous Ranking: 4 (-)Credentials: U.S. Senator from California (2017–Current); Attorney General of California (2011–2017); District Attorney of San Francisco (2004–2011)
5. Pete Buttigieg
Previous Ranking: 5 (-)Credentials: Mayor of South Bend, Indiana (2012 — Current)
6. Andrew Yang
Previous Ranking: 6 (-)Credentials: Entrepreneur
7. Cory Booker
Previous Ranking: 7 (-)Credentials: U.S. Senator from New Jersey (2013-Present); Mayor of Newark, NJ (2006-2013); Newark City Council (1998-2002)
Notes:
8. Beto O'Rourke
Previous Ranking: 8 (-)Credentials: U.S. Representative from Texas (2013–2019); El Paso City Council (2005-2011)
Notes: O'Rourke is the only candidate in my Top 8 that hasn't provided Q3 fundraising totals yet. He has only said that it was more than his Q2 total. That's not a great sign for his already struggling campaign, especially since he's also the only Top 8 candidate who has not yet qualified for the 5th primary debate in November.
